Sources of Platinum
Anode slime generated during the electrolytic production of hydrogen peroxide contains 423.5 g/t Pt and 56.87% Pb.
Platinum Recovery Process
The platinum recovery process consists of the following optimized steps:
1. Alkaline Leaching
Slime is mixed with 20% NaOH solution at a solid/liquid ratio of 1:15. The mixture is heated to 90°C and leached with agitation for 2 hours, achieving ≈95% Pb dissolution.
2. Electrowinning
Combined filtrate and wash solution undergo DC electrolysis at ambient temperature. Using a cathode voltage of 3V and current density of 150 A/m², crude lead deposits on the cathode over 8 hours.
3. Solution Regeneration
The spent electrolyte is treated with lime at 70°C for 2 hours. After filtering out gypsum (CaSO₄), the solution is replenished with NaOH and recycled for subsequent leaching.
4. Platinum Refining
The alkaline residue (4% yield) is dissolved in aqua regia followed by denitration. Sulfuric acid is added to precipitate PbSO₄. Platinum is then refined from the mother liquor using ammonium chloride precipitation.
